On 27th November, the November Publishers' Fair is back once more at the Manchester Central Library. This time, we have 13 (unlucky for some - not for us!) INCREDIBLE Northern presses lined up for you to meet and buy some quality books from.
Let's take a closer look at who you'll be browsing bookish wares from in less than a month's time...
Multi-award winning independent publisher of beautifully written stories, Bluemoose Books is based in Hebden Bridge and ran by powerhouse couple Kevin and Hetha Duffy. Some of Bluemoose Books' publications include the award-winning titles Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession, and The Gallows Pole by Benjamin Myers. Bluemoose Books' aim is to publish stories that engage and inspire.
Based in Salford, award-winning independent publisher of distinctive fiction, nature and culture, Saraband Books and sister imprint Contraband publishes books that are in particular focused on environmental issues, outstanding fiction, and compelling memoirs. Saraband's titles include Recovering Dorothy by Polly Atkin, whilst Contraband's titles include His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet.
A cracking team of climbers, cyclists, walkers, designers and photographers running an award-winning publishing empire from The Outdoor City, Vertebrate Publishing is dedicated to publishing titles that explore the great outdoors and the natural world. Some of Vertebrate Publishing's notable titles include In It For The Long Run by Damian Hall, and Tales From The Big Trails by Martyn Howe.
Stairwell Books is a small press publisher who specialises in poetry anthologies, short stories and novels from new writers. Notable titles from Stairwell Books include the DI Ambrose series by PJ Quinn and The Great Billy Butlin Race by Robin Richards. Stairwell Books seeks to publish stories that are insightful, literary, and visual - books that are transformative for readers.
Fly on the Wall Press is a not-for-profit Manc independent publisher. A publisher with a conscience. Small Press of Year finalist 2020 & 2021 British Book Awards. Notable titles include History of Forgetfulness by Shahe Mankerian and the Planet in Peril anthology. Fly on the Wall Press publishes poetry collections, novellas, short story collections, anthologies and, starting 2022, novels.
Bearded Badger Publishing Co launched in 2020 with two key imprints: Tra[verse]: a collection of chapbook sized poetry publications, and East of Centre: a range of contemporary and modern fiction by East Midlands writers. One of Bearded Badger Publishing Co's most popular and recent titles is Seven Nights At The Flamingo Hotel by Drew Gummerson.
Comma Press is a not-for-profit publisher specialising in the short story and fiction in translation. It is committed to a spirit of risk-taking, and aims to put the short story at the heart of contemporary narrative culture. Some of Comma Press's mot well-known titles include the The Book Of...series, which is a series of anthologies showcasing quality writing from writers across cities such as Shanghai, Tokyo, and Reykjavik.
Now in its fifth decade, Carcanet Press publishes the most comprehensive and diverse list available of modern and classic poetry in English and in translation, as well as a range of inventive fiction, Lives and Letters and literary criticism. Carcanet Press' backlist spans hundreds of titles, including The Air Year by Caroline Bird and In Nearby Bushes by Kei Miller.
Named after the magazine it founded in 1994, The Third Alternative, which was renowned for its slipstream/horror fiction. The Third Alternative is now known as Black Static. TTA Press also publish Interzone, Britain's longest running science fiction and fantasy magazine, plus a series of novellas showcasing longer works by some of TTA's best known contributors and the anthology series Crimewave.
Cōnfingō is an independent publishing house based in Manchester, UK. They create beautiful editions of new fiction, poetry and art in all forms. Some of Cōnfingō's most recently published titles include All You Need Is Dynamite by Dave Haslam, and Between Tongues by Paul McQuade. Twice a year, Cōnfingō publishes a collection of previously unpublished works.
Flapjack Press publishes poetry, poetry-theatre, plays and art collections for adults and children, and coordinates Word Central in association with Manchester Libraries. Exploring the synergy between performance and the page, Flapjack Press' publications include A Poet Called Dave by Dave Viney, and We Kid Ourselves by Tony Curry.
Hidden Voice Publishing is an independent publishing resource centre that supports & represents authors from under-represented groups with publishing paper back and Amazon Kindle books. Some of the most notable publications by Hidden Voice Publishing includes I Know Why The Gay Man Dances by Joel Sadler-Puckering, and Inky Black Woman by Mina Aidoo.
Penteract Press is a publisher of formal poetry. Their focus is on exploring the structural properties of poetry — in particular, the relationship between content and form. To this end, they aim to promote innovative constrained and visual poetry, as well as works that explore new uses of traditional verse forms. Penteract Press's titles include Chimera by James Knight.
